Winning or Losing the Game
==========================
An empire has lost a game when all of its supply centers have been captured by
enemy empires. Of course, this can only happen at the end of a Fall turn, when
the builds and disbands are counted. When an empire has lost the game, it is
not allowed to enter any moves on subsequent turns, but may view the progress
of the game like anyone else. Also, if the player has points on the scoreboard
from winning previous games, their score goes down 3 points. Scores cannot go
below 0. A player with a score of 0 is not listed in the Rank Players screen
on the main menu.
A game can end in one of three ways. The simplest is when there is only one
empire left owning supply centers. When this occurs, the player wins the game,
and earns a number of points equal to the number of supply centers he or she
controls at the end of the game.
The second way in which a game can end is if the game date reaches Christmas
Eve of 1945. This was chosen as an arbitrary date for automatic closing of
games; I personally have never known an active game to last beyond 1925, and
most games are over by 1910. If this occurs, every player left alive at the
end of the game receives points as enumerated above.
The third way to end the game is by declaring a truce. The Truce option in the
game menu is only available once there are 3 or less empires remaining in the
game; more than three empires cannot maintain a politically viable truce. Once
the field has been whittled down to 3 players or less, you may select the Truce
option to decide whether you would like to end the game. If at the end of any
season (after there are 3 or less players left, of course), all the remaining
players have declared a truce, the game is ended and the remaining players earn
points as enumerated above. Neutral empires (which no player signed up for
before the game began - there can be no more than 2 neutral empires in a game),
earn no points, and always support a truce. Player empires default to NOT
supporting a truce, unless the player selects the Truce option on the game
menu.
When a game is finished, it will remain on the game list for 7 days, during
which any players or observers may view the game and see the final scores.
